History

Family Connection of South Carolina, Inc. was started 16 years ago by parents who had children with special needs.  Those parents found that through their experiences, they could make life easier for others going through similar situations.  They realized that if a child has special needs, so does the entire family.

Now, 16 years and 20,000 families later, this statewide non-profit organization serves as a network of parents who offer parent-to-parent support to other parents who have children with developmental delays, disabilities or chronic illnesses.  This network of parent volunteers receives 12 hours of training by professional that also volunteer their time and talents.

In 1995, The Children's Hospital of the Greenville Hospital System was looking for someone to take on the responsibility of providing a support group for families who were going through the NICU experience.  Family Connection stood ready, with a structured program in place.  This collaboration made it possible for Family Connection to begin a satellite program in Greenville.  The office is now located at The William R. DeLoache Center for Developmental Services, where the staff has daily contact with families who bring their children to the center for services.
