Awareness The Key to Friendships
Students who have disabilities and special needs face many challenges in school and their community every day. Their teachers, peers, and community also face the challenges of understanding their disability and being sensitive to the day-to-day obstacles they face every day.
The South Carolina Department of Education has recognized this challenge and has recently awarded a grant to Family Connection of South Carolina, Inc. to promote the program, Awareness: The Key to Friendships, in school districts across the state. Through this program, school districts will have the opportunity to help students without disabilities, as well as teachers and people in their community, better understand what it is like to live with a disability. Click here for a list of participating schools.
The Program is centered around activity centers which are set up in media centers, multi-purpose rooms or cafeterias of the school and are designed to give the students an opportunity to experience what it is like to have a learning disability, hearing impairment, visual impairment and physical disability. The presentation time is 30 minutes.
