Home Schooling

Under federal law, all states (and local school districts) are required to find and evaluate homeschooled kids who may need special education.

South Carolina has 3 options for home schooling. Parents can choose which option works best for their student.

  1. 1. Parents may home school their children under the supports of a school district, if approved by the board of trustees.
  2. 2. Parents may home school their children with the support of the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools.
  3. 3. Parents may choose a home school association which has no fewer than fifty members and meets the home school requirements.
  4.

Students who are home schooled may be eligible for special education services provided by their district. When considering home schooling as option for your child, reach out to your local district to see what special education services it offers and begin the process of constructing an IEP (Individualized Education Plan).
